How to Jump Start Another Car

When you’re prepared with a set of jumper cables, you may be able to help another motorist or yourself. They’re not difficult to use, but you do need to practice a few safety precautions. One of the first things you need to recognize is which of the cables represent the positive and negative charge. Once you’ve identified that, you’ll need to make sure they don’t touch any other metal surface once they’re connected to a battery.

The red, or red stripe, cable represents the positive charge. The black cable is the negative. It’s best to begin by connecting the cables to the dead battery first. The positive/red cable is connected first and then the black/negative cable. The same steps are repeated on the good battery. Once they’re attached to each battery, let them charge for a couple of minutes. Press the accelerator for a minute, and then try to start the other car.

If the car won’t start after trying a few times, it’s best to take it in for service. There may be a situation with the electrical system. When you have any maintenance questions about your car, don’t hesitate to bring it by our Honda parts facility here in Philadelphia, PA. We’ll be happy to assist you.
