Most drivers have experienced being tailgated while driving. It is annoying and can be dangerous. If you look in your rearview mirror and notice someone driving very close to the back of your car there are things you should do to remain safe. They include:

  • Slow down and try to move out of the way so the person tailgating you can pass. You are safest when a tailgater is front of you so. So try to get the tailgater to go around you by slowing down.
  • Move to the "slow lane" to allow faster moving traffic to go by. Traffic typically moves faster in the inner lanes. Also, staying in the outer lane allows you to pull off of the road if necessary.
  • If the route you normally take is always full of tailgaters you may want to find a different route to get to your destination. Instead of congested highways you might want to take the city streets.
